Marine Mutton or McDonalds

We have been told that Icelandic lamb has a different flavor than what you get here in the States. Sooo, as is my custom, I bought something "special" last time I did a demo for Whole Foods Market. Icelandic lamb is available in their meat department. Two small loin chops (0.45 lbs) cost $14-something per lb. Recipe books recommended garlic and rosemary for seasoning. After letting the lamb marinade for about an hour, I broiled it for 17-20 minutes to make sure the internal temperature came to 140* F. Joel was wary from the start, but willing to try the ICELANDIC food. We agree that Icelandic lamb does taste different from American lamb. It had a marine flavor. Too lamb-y for us. We put down our forks and drove to Dinkytown to visit the bookstores…and McDonalds.

"Marine"? So, it tasted "fishy"? Please explain, because I am confused (and you know it doesn’t take much to confuse me)!

The difference in flavor was due to what the animals eat, no doubt. Berries and vegetation other than Midwestern grass and clover probably make up their diet…I don’t know. Fishy? Yes. Why? Maybe they eat the seaweed like plant that grows in the island streams. The texture was a little slimier than I prefer too, but that could be my own fault. Maybe it could be compared to a fatty roast beef-tender, but slimy. Joel did say that he could learn to tolerate it in a fish stew.

What did Doug think when you said "Marine?" Maybe that it tasted like military rations?

I did have that thought pass through, but I kind of had the idea KJ was thinking "fishy".

Funny, I gave my fiance the link to Katrina’s site so she could read about good food to make for me, and the latest post is about lambs. Her last name is Lamb.
